Description
Tom Thumb Wedding - Black and White
The practice of Tom Thumb weddings can be traced back to a dwarf or little person named Tom Thumb who traveled with P. T. Barnum's circus in the mid 1800's. In 1863, "General Tom Thumb" married a Ms Lavinia Warren (another little person) in New York. They had a wedding party of 10,000 people, and afterward were received as guests to President Abraham Lincoln at the White House.
This famous wedding sparked the practice of having false wedding parties and ceremonies for young children. I have read an article from 2017 that suggests that Tom Thumb weddings are still going on in America today, although I have never witnessed one myself.
The "Tom Thumb" wedding in this piece presumably took place between 1904-1918.
This darling piece should print well at any size you desire, and would be fun for use in an actual wedding party. It would make a wonderful piece of decor for almost any wedding venue. This piece will be offered in sepia, black and white, and as a cyanotype. If you are looking for some other variation, please let me know.
